Jennifer Aniston has made it clear that she can't imagine the legendary series Friends without Matthew Perry. In a recent interview, the actress said:
"It would be literally, impossible," referring to a possible return of the series without their beloved friend and colleague.
Matthew Perry died in October 2023, at the age of 54, from a ketamine overdose. Before he passed away, he spoke about his long battle with depression and addiction.
“It’s heartbreaking that he had to deal with so many demons,” Aniston said. “But for someone who was fighting so much on the inside, he managed to give us so many laughs, and that was everything to him.”
Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry were part of the cast of Friends , along with Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer. The series that changed the history of American television ran for 10 seasons and ended in 2004, creating fans around the world.
"Friends shaped me as a person. It was pure joy. I couldn't wait to go to work every day," Aniston said, describing how important the project was to her personal and professional life.
According to her, the magic of Friends didn't just lie in the script or humor, but in the special bond between the actors:
"There was something rare about our chemistry, like a magical spark captured in a bottle. We were lucky it was captured on camera."
Thanks to online streaming platforms, Friends is experiencing a new 'boom' in popularity, as a new generation of viewers is discovering it for the first time.
“A lot of people tell me that they watch Friends to help with their mental health,” Aniston said. “When they feel stressed about the world around them, they just sit down and watch an episode. And that’s the best compliment we can get.”
In 2021, the six friends reunited for a special episode, Friends: The Reunion , produced by HBO Max , a touching tribute that for many also marked Matthew Perry's last appearance on screen.
