Should you wash your hair every day or just once a week? Opinions abound, and trends like dry shampoo have led many people to avoid washing their hair too often. But while it works for some, for others it can do more harm than good. Here are some signs that your hair needs more care and a little more shampoo.
1. You always have oily hair.
If your hair looks "down", limp and lifeless, you're probably washing it too infrequently. Natural oil (sebum) is necessary, but too much of it can make your hair greasy quickly. To manage it, I can wash my hair every 1-2 days with a shampoo that controls oil and apply conditioner only to the lengths of my hair.
2. You have itching and dandruff
When you don't wash your hair enough, oil and dead cells build up on your scalp. This can lead to dandruff, itching, and even mild infections. In such cases, washing your hair more frequently and using a clarifying shampoo every 1-2 weeks can help a lot.
3. Your hair is dull and lackluster.
If your hair looks dull and lackluster, it could be due to too much product that isn't being properly cleansed. A good wash is enough to restore shine and volume. If you use a lot of product, consider a deep-cleansing shampoo.
4. Your hair smells bad.
Yes, hair that isn't washed often can smell unpleasant—from sweat, oil, pollution, or just product buildup. If it happens frequently, it's not even a matter of aesthetics, but of basic hygiene. Washing more regularly eliminates the odor and the bacteria that cause it.
5. If your hair is falling out
Infrequent washing can lead to inflammation in the scalp, which in some cases leads to hair loss. When follicles become blocked or irritated, they are not properly nourished. A clean scalp = a healthier breeding ground for hair.
