A first-generation iPhone from 2007 sold for more than $63,000 at an online auction on Sunday, February 19, more than 100 times its original cost. Billed as a "first edition" device by LCG Auctions, the iPhone was boxed and never opened.
The original iPhone cost $599 and offered Apple users at the time an 8.89-centimeter display with a 2-megapixel camera, plus 4GB and 8GB storage options, Internet capabilities, and iTunes. It had no App Store and ran on a 2G network.
The initial bid started at $2,500, but a total of 27 bids were made until she won at $63,000.
Mark Montero, founder of LCG Auctions, told CNN that in the end, 10 buyers competed for the iPhone, and the phone was eventually taken by "an individual from the US."
Another first-generation iPhone, unlocked, sold for over $39,000, also from LCG Auctions that closed in October.
The iPhone changed the way billions of people around the world communicate, make payments, run errands, take photos and even wake up in the morning. It spawned dozens of industries (cameras, MP3 players, 'rail' phones) and gave life to many others.
Steve Jobs called the new smartphone a "revolutionary mobile phone" that will have an iPod, phone and what he called an "internet communicator". And so it was, a revolution that forever changed the world of mobile phones, technology and more.
