Retinol is one of the most popular ingredients in skincare, and for good reason. It rejuvenates cells, boosts collagen production, reduces skin hyperpigmentation, and smoothes fine lines and wrinkles. All of this contributes to brighter, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin.
However, every summer the question arises: can we use retinol safely during the warmer months, when sun exposure is more intense?
Traditionally, many of us choose to stop using it from spring to fall, for fear of increased sun sensitivity. However, it seems we can still use it in the summer, as long as we take the right precautions.
Retinol can be especially beneficial during this time, as it supports collagen production, which is damaged by sun exposure. It also helps improve skin texture and tone, and can reduce sun-induced pigmentation. The humidity of summer also favors its use, as it reduces dryness and the risk of irritation.
So, if we want to continue using retinol during the summer, there are some basic rules we should follow:
We should only apply it at night.
Retinol is not photostable and breaks down in light. It also makes the skin more sensitive to the sun. We only apply it at night to avoid irritation.
We don't forget the sunscreen the next morning.
We should use SPF50 sunscreen every day and reapply it every two hours. It is the most important step to protect the skin from irritation and redness.
We use light products
Retinol combined with sun can be harmful to the skin. Choose gentle, hydrating cleansers with ceramides or hyaluronic acid, and avoid other exfoliating ingredients like AHAs and BHAs. If you use vitamin C, apply it in the morning and not with retinol.
Choose low concentration
Especially in the summer, it is important to start with a low concentration, especially if we have sensitive skin or it is our first time using retinol.
Avoid use on irritated skin.
If you get sunburned, stop using retinol immediately. The skin needs time to heal before it can absorb an active ingredient like this.
We need to take breaks during the holidays.
If we plan on being in the sun a lot, we should temporarily discontinue retinol a week before and during our trip. We carefully reintroduce it into our routine when we return.
