Let's be realistic - most of us have to work. But how we put work on a pedestal and torture ourselves by working long hours is 100% a personal choice.
A study published by the Association for Personality and Social Psychology found that people who value free time more than money feel more fulfilled and satisfied with life. Give free time a more important place in your life and see how you feel!
The study involved over 4,600 people, and the split was almost even: some who wanted more money, some who chose time. But here's the interesting part: those who chose time were happier.
So why does this happen?
As people get older, they start to realize that time is more valuable than a big paycheck. You may have a big bank account, but if you're always in the office, how often will you have the chance to enjoy life?
One of the study's authors, Harvard professor Ashley Whillans, says:
"The older we get, the more we seek deeper meanings in life – and that rarely has to do with money."
She advises: Even if you give up a few hours of work to do something that fulfills you spiritually, such as volunteer work, the effect on your happiness is much greater.
We made all the mistakes.
Even Whillans herself, when she was younger, chose money over time – "Work hard now so you can enjoy later," she would say. Until one day she woke up and asked herself:
"What have I done with my life?"
A message to young people who want to work hard now to rest later - maybe it's not worth spending your most energetic years stressing about the next paycheck.
Did you know that many people don't take all of their vacation days in a year? Yes, just because people feel guilty about taking a break. In a time when stress is epidemic, isn't that ironic?
"When you're exhausted, you're not productive, you're irritable, and you don't even know why you're irritable all the time - take a break - you've earned it!", says Whillans.
Don't always choose the offer that has the most money – also look at how much you have left to live.
Because in the end, no one has ever said on their deathbed: “Oh, if only I had spent one more hour on Zoom.”
