After I got married, I was ready to build our life together, with the stresses, the joys, everything that life brings. And yup, wrong! My mother-in-law has a natural talent for always being where she's not invited: checking everything I do, talking about me behind my back, and trying to take up every second of my husband's time.
And she's obsessed with him, I swear. Not in a cute way, no, she thinks he belongs to her forever "because a son has a mother". I'll bet, every plan we make together, every dinner or vacation, is an opportunity for her to "test" our loyalty. And when things don't go her way, she creates drama on Turkish soap opera levels.
She talks to my husband about me behind his back, manipulates him, criticizes me, every day with a new show. And when I try to speak directly, she looks at me like I have committed a national crime. Moreover, she often makes me feel like the "stranger" in my marriage, even though I am not the one who married him.
If I had a dollar for every time she tried to break us up, I would open a spa in Tirana with the profits hahaha. And let's not forget: she doesn't miss a single detail to criticize me, from the food I cook to the way she puts my husband's underwear in the closet. Everything is wrong. Everything!
But here's what I'm realizing for myself, all this obsession with her only shows one thing, she's insecure, period. In the end, I'm my husband's wife, and he has chosen to give me his love, not to the one he thinks "knows best" all the time.
So, my dear mother-in-law, thank you for the drama, the stress, and the backstabbing. You've given me reasons to laugh, reflect, and love my marriage even more, and yes, I will continue to do whatever I want, without asking for your eternal approval.
