Netflix is ??being sued by a South Korean broadcaster for increasing traffic to watch the "Squid Game" series.
Netflix has produced several very successful series over the years: Stranger Things, Bridgerton, The Witcher, Money Heist, The Queen's Gambit, Sex Education, etc.
However, the latter (Squid Game) may be the most popular series to date topping broadcast platforms worldwide.
In South Korea, the demand to see it is so widespread that it is burdening broadband providers.
SK Broadband has filed a lawsuit against Netflix after the series allegedly caused an increase in traffic. The firm believes Netflix should "help" financially with increased network traffic and maintenance performance, Reuters reports.
Other South Korean providers have also criticized the current deal with Netflix and other content producers who do not pay for network usage despite series like Squid Game causing unpredictable traffic growth.
A Netflix spokesman said in a statement to CNBC:
"We will review the claim raised against us. In the meantime, we will continue to seek open dialogue and explore ways of working with SK Broadband in order to provide a hassle-free experience for our mutual clients."
Platform co-CEO Ted Sarandos spoke recently about the series' success, noting that it was number one "anywhere in the world" and would be "the biggest non-English show in the world, for sure." He also said there is "a very good chance it will be our biggest show ever", referring to the number of people who have seen it and will see it.
