In Western countries, especially in America, there is a kind of "culture" generally known as the cancellation culture. Not many times, celebrities have received massive criticism from followers, who usually respond with the hashtag #cancel implying that a person (who in most cases is a celebrity) is canceled.
The culture of cancellation is in some way a form of boycott, which is applied to people / institutions / organizations / movements etc. who have shared controversial thoughts and / or behaviors.
Through the culture of cancellation, people seek to draw attention to behaviors and thoughts that are considered problematic. "Canceled people" are deprived of privileges they may have had before. For example, a well-known actor, after a derogatory act / thought for a multitude of people, is not invited to the media as a result of the culture of cancellation, is not interviewed and his career goes downhill.
Of course the effect of this form of "boycott" is worth discussing; there have been cases that have turned out to be the opposite of what was expected, but this is another matter.
