International Women's Day is celebrated all over the world. Not only will the achievements of women be celebrated, but also the obstacles they face day by day will be pointed out. If you want to get involved or understand the meaning, here is everything you need to know:
When did it start?
Although recognized by the United Nations in 1977, Women's Day has its origins in the early 20th century, when labor protests began in North America and Europe. During World War I, members of the women's movement in Russia celebrated First Women's Day on March 8, 1913, to protest the war. A year later, on the same date, women across Europe gathered in solidarity rallies.
It was Clara Zetkin, a communist and women's rights activist who suggested setting up an international day like this. She presented her idea at the International Workers' Conference in Copenhagen in 1910 and the 100 women who were there from 17 countries of the world, all accepted it unanimously.

March 8 was first celebrated in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. After World War II, almost all states began to use March 8 as Women's Rights Day. More than a century later, on March 8, endless events and marches are held to celebrate the achievements of women and to fight for equality.
Why March 8?

The United Nations decided that the theme for March 8 was "Gender Equality Today, for a Sustainable Tomorrow." All events that will be organized aim to recognize and appreciate women who are changing the world.
International Women's Day is considered an official holiday in many parts of the world. In China women are given half a day off work, while in Italy it is celebrated with many, many mimosas.
Unfortunately, even this year the festivities will continue to look a little different due to the coronavirus and the tense events that are taking place in the world.
