The punctuality crisis is said to have affected everything from housing rents and supermarket prices to social relationships. Now, it seems it has also affected the most personal aspect of our lives: sexuality.
The romantic distancing caused by trying to always be "right" is not just a joke or "collateral damage"; it is a broader social phenomenon that affects the mental health, self-esteem, and romantic lives of young people.
According to a recent study, young people of Generation Z are facing what is described as a “sexual recession.” One-night stands and casual relationships have become luxuries, not for emotional reasons, but simply for economic reasons.
A survey conducted by Lovehoney in the UK shows that over 50% of young people aged 18–24 live in cohabitation arrangements: with parents, friends or strangers. The result? The lack of personal space and privacy directly affects their sex lives.

Young people living with family have an average of about 35 sexual encounters per year, nearly 50% fewer than the national average of 68. Meanwhile, masturbation is on the rise: 42% of those living with their parents say they masturbate several times a week, compared to just 28% of the general population.
In search of alternatives, many young people of Generation Z are choosing less “traditional” places for sex. Public bathrooms are the most used (22% of respondents have tried them), followed by cars at 18%.
Relationship and sex expert Annabelle Knight shares some practical tips via Indy100 for maintaining intimacy with your partner, even when you don't live alone:
Plan your meetings: Instead of waiting until “the house is empty,” make a schedule with your roommates. Knowing in advance when you have private space helps you feel more relaxed and secure.
Speak openly (as much as necessary): Express your needs clearly, without going into too much detail. Even a simple sentence like “Can I have the house for an hour?” can make a difference. With parents it’s harder, but creating personal space is essential.
Think outside the bedroom: If home doesn't offer options, try booking a hotel room, a small vacation spot nearby, or an Airbnb to maintain privacy.
