Kathy Bates has spoken candidly about why she decided not to have breast reconstruction surgery after being diagnosed with cancer and having a double mastectomy, and her reason is simple: "less is more."
The actress explained on the "MeSsy" podcast with Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler that her breasts were so heavy, they weighed 5 pounds when they were removed during a double mastectomy in 2012.
So removing it, the actress felt it as a great relief. Kathy admitted that her decision caused some backlash, but stressed that, after a long period of having large breasts, she now enjoys the ease of not having them.
The Oscar winner also said social factors played a role in her decision: she was older, didn't think she'd be in a romantic relationship anytime soon, and just didn't see the need for new breasts after all the hardships had passed She was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer.
Kathy also emphasized that this decision did not affect her career; during the filming of her last TV series "Matlock", they improvised a breast with fake cups to give her a realistic shape.
Ultimately, Kathy's decision not to have her breast reconstruction done was simply about feeling good in her own skin!
