10 "Supportive" Comments That People Actually Make to Put You Down

Have you ever had someone say something to you that seems like a compliment, but a minute later you feel worse than before? It seems like they want to support you, but in reality they are making you feel smaller. Such expressions may seem like support, but they are hidden behind a purpose that reminds you who the compliment is serving!

Here are some expressions that seem like people use to evoke positive feelings, but actually do the opposite.

1. “I wouldn't have the courage to do what you do. I'm too anxious.”

Translation: "You're doing things that only crazy people do. How can you be so irresponsible all of a sudden?!"

2. "Wow, how dare you wear that"

Here's a compliment that sounds more like an expression that says "If you were to kill me, I wouldn't be wearing that awful colorful shirt."

3. “I really like that you always say everything that's on your mind.”

Or: "Sometimes you put a muzzle on your mouth because it annoys us."

4. “Wow you’ve made all this progress.”

The clear translation: "Did this day come to you too?"

5. “You're doing the best you can.”

Here's a support that clearly takes pleasure in doubting your abilities.

6. “This is such a good thing... for someone your age.”

Ah, yes... an expression that limits your success by telling you that it could be better, but for "your age" it's very impressive.

7. “You are very independent, I hope you find someone who accepts you for who you are.”

Or in simple terms: "You are independent, but you can't always be that way if you're going to get married one day."

8. “I wish I had time for things like this.”

The real meaning: “I'm doing things that are more important... You're just doing something that feels nice because you have plenty of time.”

9. “Hmm, interesting choice.”

This expression shows that that person finds your choice anything but interesting.

10. “Oh, how sensitive you are.”

This expression is usually accompanied by a sad face in the background. The real meaning: calm down, there's nothing going on to make you so upset.
