'Boyfriend air': How true is TikTok's (slightly scary) boyfriend

"Boyfriend air" is the latest TikTok term that you may have seen thrown around without much context and explanation.

The theory behind the lover's air is quite simple, although they all have their own variations.

The #BoyfriendAir hashtag has 14 million views on TikTok, even though it's been around for less than a month.

According to Know Your Meme, the air of a lover is when you spend a lot of time with your partner, and your "flaws" related to physical appearance are highlighted more.

This can include: messy hair, ruined makeup or irritated skin.

Others associate it with "lack of effort to look good".

One user wrote:

“I just learned about the 'boyfriend air' theory and it made me realize that I've stopped trying to look my best. Why? Starting today, I'm going to take care of myself and get back to being the sexy girl I've always been."

This theory derives from "school air" - which is more or less the same thing, but from school and not from a loved one.

However, regarding the latter, many people are skeptical of the theory.

"There is no such thing as 'boyfriend air'. You're just starting to feel comfortable and yourself around your partner, and there's nothing wrong with that," someone writes.
