"Split" is the psychological thriller-horror film starring James McAvoy. The story revolves around the character of Kevin Wendall Crumb who has 23 separate personalities as part of the identity disorder.
In the field of mental health experts, the film has caused a lot of controversy over how the disorder of multiple personalities is portrayed.
The character appears in a wicked connotation, kidnapping 3 girls and at the climax of the film, a fourth personality named "Beast" also appears, who seems to develop demon-like superpowers.
According to psychologist Michelle Stevens, all of this affects the perpetuation of negative stereotypes about the condition. At the time the film was released, she published an open letter to the Hollywood Reporter, in which she wrote that "identity disorders are real mental illnesses affecting millions of people," including herself.
"When you and others in Hollywood make fun of our disorder, what difference does it make from a bully in the schoolyard making fun of a child with a disability? Would you make a movie about a person with Down Syndrome who has a sexual fantasy of "Are you going to write a screenplay for an autistic killer? Certainly not. It 's disgusting. So why not make fun of my mental illness?"
Other experts in the field have said that it is "unfair to portray a mentally ill person as a genuine demon."
However, despite the criticism, the film's popularity was not damaged, at least commercially. By the time it came out it was at the top of the charts of the most watched movies. Plus, the main character continues to be a good meme object: "That wasn't me, that was Patricia".
