Former Vice President and current presidential candidate Joe Biden broke the record for the largest number of votes collected by presidential candidates in US history.
In 2008, when he defeated John McCain, Barack Obama garnered 69,498,516 votes, according to the Federal Election Commission. When Trump lost the popular vote but won the Electoral College four years ago, he garnered 62,984,828 votes or 46.09%. Former Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton garnered 65,853,514 votes or 48.18%, but lost the election to the Electoral College (a minimum of 270 electoral votes is required for a candidate to be declared president).
Currently, Joe Biden counts more than 72 million votes, but that does not translate into victory . Trump is also likely to break Barack Obama's record due to the highest voter turnout in this important election in U.S. history.
