On an evening that was expected to be another moment of triumph for Beyoncé in Houston, an unpredictable moment occurred, but one that Beyoncé knew how to handle with Olympic calm.
During the performance of "16 Carriages," the singer was airborne on a red flying car (yes, a flying Cadillac), scheduled to circle the stadium, until things went awry.
The cable car began to tilt as it rounded a corner over the audience. Instead of panicking or losing control, Beyoncé – with the composure that is now part of her image – held onto the cable, continued singing, and then, in the tone of a stage director, shouted “Stop, stop, stop.”
Footage shows her hovering for a few moments before being pulled back and lowered by security. When she landed, she showed no signs of panic, instead addressing the audience with a smile, saying:
"I want to thank you for loving me. If I ever fall, I know you will catch me."
A statement that was simultaneously a promise, a thank you, and a performance in itself.
Parkwood Entertainment confirmed the event a little later in an official statement:
"A technical problem caused the flying car to tilt. It landed immediately and no one was injured. The show continued without further incident."
And so it happened. Because when you're Beyoncé, even when things don't work out, the show must go on . :)
