The whole world is facing extreme temperatures, which are setting new records. Finally, due to the El Niño phenomenon, temperatures in Greece are expected to reach 43 degrees today.
Local authorities have advised people not to go out during the peak heat hours, which are 12:00 - 17:00. On the other hand, tourist attractions will continue to be closed.
Another consequence of high temperatures is the spread of fires, which have invaded the eastern and southeastern part of Greece, forcing the authorities to issue an orange alert. The island of Crete has been affected by fires, endangering homes and businesses.
Italy is also affected by the heat wave and it is predicted that throughout this week the temperatures will continue to be high. The Italian authorities have placed the red alert in 16 cities of the country, including Rome. They warned people to avoid going out of the 11:00 - 18:00 hours, and to take extra care of the elderly and children.

The statement "is a signal to governments around the world to mobilize preparations to limit impacts on health, ecosystems and the economy".
To save lives, governments must establish early warning systems and prepare for other devastating weather events this year, he said.
