How not to lose control of your life when you're unemployed

Losing a job not only affects your financial situation, but also your mental and emotional well-being. It's easy to feel hopeless, but how you cope with this period can make all the difference. Here are some steps that can help:

1. Accept it as normal.

Unemployment is not uncommon. At some point in their lives, about 41% of people experience it. So you're not alone. However, being common doesn't mean it's easy.

2. Give yourself the right to feel bad.

It's normal to feel anxious or insecure. Feelings are valid, but don't let them paralyze you. Accept them and at the same time decide to take steps to change the situation.

3. Don't take it personally.

Losing a job is often not related to your skills, but to market conditions and changes in the company. About 7 million people lose their jobs every year, so it's a situation that many face.

4. Don't be shy.

Many people associate their personal value with their job status. Don't isolate yourself! Social networks and contacts can be the key to your future job.

5. Now you have two jobs: research and taking care of yourself.

A common mistake is to think that unemployment leaves you with nothing to do. Your job now is to look for a new opportunity and take care of your mental and physical health.

6. Structure your day

The lack of a fixed schedule can make you feel lost. Plan weekly and monthly activities that keep you active: exercise, reading, online courses, meeting up with friends, or volunteering.

7. Leverage your network

In addition to emotional support, your network of contacts is a valuable source for employment. 80% of jobs are found through acquaintances and 70% of them are not advertised online at all.

8. Don't see it as an emergency

The pressure to find a job right away can cause unnecessary stress. Give yourself time and find ways to fill your days with useful and fun activities.

9. Think of it as a “vacation”

Instead of seeing it as a dark period, use it to do things you didn't have time for before: take care of your children, improve your skills, connect with new people. Many people later realize that this period was valuable for their personal growth.

10. Discover free activities

Lack of income can be challenging, but there are many activities you can do without spending money: walking, meditating, meeting friends, free online courses. In addition, it's a good time to think about your relationship with money and unnecessary spending.

11. Be flexible in your job search

If you're having trouble finding a job within your field, consider changing job levels, salary, or location. Sometimes, a new opportunity can open unexpected doors.

12. Give yourself credit.

 

Every day you try, even in small steps, is a day won. Instead of dwelling on your failures, focus on your progress. Ask yourself, “If a friend were in this situation, what would I say to support them?” Then, say the same thing to yourself.

Unemployment can be a difficult challenge, but it is not the end. It is a transitional period that can serve as a starting point for something better.
