We hear every day that putting on a mask is the simplest and most important step that helps prevent Covid-19, but little is said about its "side effects" on the face. Beyond irritating the skin and creating acne, the mask also affects the eyes. The phenomenon of "dry eyes" from the mask has been observed since the beginning of the pandemic.
The discomfort caused by the mask forces the eyes to produce more tears to deal with it. Something like this then causes irritated eyes, more redness than usual, itching and become more sensitive to light. Other external factors that can worsen "dry eyes" are prolonged stay in front of a computer, wind, or any interference you may have had in the eye before.
While the mask has long been an integral part of our lives, we need to follow some tips to avoid eye problems, steam-filled glasses or irritated skin. The first step is to set it up properly.
MADE typically stems from poorly fitted face coverings, ëhether they're too loose or too tight. "Just like your breath can fog up your glasses, loose masks alloë your breath to escape along your nasal bridge and vent up into your eyes, causing your tear film to dry out," Dr. Esparaz explained. Meanëhile, masks that fit too snugly can keep your eyes from blinking properly. "Your eyelids hold your tears and blinking restores your tear film. If you're unable to blink normally, your tears ëill evaporate faster than normal," she said.
Be sure to place it under your eyes, to prevent the discomfort you may cause them from touching them and remember to occasionally take a break by disconnecting from any electronic devices to relax them.
