After 9 years, Sali Berisha was re-elected at the head of the Democratic Party.
In a vote that took place in 108 polling stations across the country on Sunday, the former prime minister faced Ibsen Elez and the election of the chairman was based on the principle of one member one vote.
43,680 Democrats went to the polls, of which 40,820 voted for Sali Berisha and 2,532 for Ibsen Elez. So, Berisha received 93.45% of the votes; 5.8% of Democrats supported Elez in this race. 328 votes turned out to be invalid.
"31 years ago, a great friend of our nation on his historic visit, James Baker, told Albanians that 'you will be free to choose your leaders,'" Berisha said. "I will do everything to make the dreams of young people come true in this country."
Ibsen Elezi, after the loss, stated that better days will not come if people do not commit and added that those who are servile or waiting for an agreement to share chairs, do not serve the future of this country.
Meanwhile, the leader of the Parliamentary Group of the Socialist Party, Taulant Balla, accused the Democratic Party of being anti-American, based on the victory of Sali Berisha in the elections for the leader of the Democratic Party. He said that yesterday's race in the DP brought a victory "against" America, after the US declared former Prime Minister Berisha non grata.
