The European Union may ban shampoos and other miniature products, which are widely used in hotels.
The proposal is part of the European Green Deal, an EU-wide plan for what is known as net zero – the balance between the amount of greenhouse gas produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere.
In Europe, each person generates an average of 180 kg of packaging waste each year. Packaging is one of the main culprits, accounting for 40% of plastic and 50% of paper used in the EU. If no action is taken, plastic packaging waste could increase by 46% by 2030, according to the European Commission.
Under the new law, several forms of unnecessary packaging will be banned, including single-use packaging for food and drinks when consumed inside restaurants and cafes, single-use packaging for fruit and vegetables, and miniature shampoo bottles and other miniature packaging in hotels.
The proposal on packaging waste is currently being considered by the European Parliament and Council.
