During an interview in the documentary "Silenced", Amber Heard recalled the trial with Johnny Depp and said that after it she had lost the ability to speak in public.
"This has nothing to do with me. I have lost the ability to speak. I am not here to tell my story. I do not want to tell it. In fact, I do not want to use my voice anymore. That is the problem," the actress said.
This documentary examines how accused men use defamation lawsuits as a legal tool to intimidate or coerce women into not speaking publicly about the abuse they have experienced.
The trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp ended in 2022 and the damage it caused, according to the actress, was enormous.
"The outcome of that trial depended on my participation, and my life depended on how that trial would end."
During the trial, the actress realized that all the hate she was receiving was precisely because she chose to speak out publicly. Everything, according to her, was going wrong because she had chosen to tell her truth.
"If people react with hatred towards me, it shows that women are punished for speaking out. I didn't realize that things could get worse for me simply because I chose to speak out."
The legal battles between the actors began after Amber Heard accused Johnny Depp of domestic violence. In addition, an article was published by The Sun, where the actor was described as an abusive husband. Immediately after them, the actor sued his ex-wife and the newspaper in the UK for defamation, but the latter won the case.
Later, in the US, the actor filed another defamation lawsuit against her, seeking damages over another article, and this time he won the case.
After the trial, Amber Heard moved to Madrid where she lives with her children.
