Just one glass of wine can affect your body in a variety of ways within 24 hours of drinking, from sleep to heartbeat.
Once you drink a glass, alcohol is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and moves throughout your body. A small amount is absorbed into the small blood vessels in your mouth, but most is absorbed into the bloodstream from your stomach and small intestine.
About 20% is distributed in the stomach, according to the Addiction Center, a referral service for the treatment of substance use disorders, while the rest is digested in the small intestine. The liver breaks down alcohol at a rate of about one drink per hour, which means that the moment you wake up the next morning, your drink will be fully processed.
However, not everyone processes alcohol in the same way, or at the same speed.
The effects of alcohol after a 24-hour period depend on how quickly your body can break down alcohol, if you drank it on an empty stomach, how fast you drank it, and how tolerant you are.
If you drink wine infrequently, you are more likely to feel its effects more intensely than someone who drinks it every day after work. Eating, especially fatty foods, delays how and how quickly "you can get drunk".
The type of wine you choose can also influence your feedback.
If you are very sensitive to histamines in red wine - red can have up to 200% more histamine than white - then you may have headaches for about 15 minutes, even after a drink.
