"Silent quitting": Why are people increasingly not committing to work?

"Silent quitting": Why are people increasingly not committing to work?

The phenomenon known as "silent quitting" - where employees decide not to give more than the required minimum - is becoming more and more common among young people in the labor market. This attitude is not simply related to a lack of commitment, but reflects several important factors that have changed the way the younger generation perceives work. What are the main reasons that are promoting the spread of this phenomenon?

1. Focus on mental health

Many young people are aware of the impact that chronic stress and overtime can have on their mental health. They are realizing the importance of maintaining their emotional well-being and are often unwilling to sacrifice this aspect to meet expectations that go beyond the criteria outlined in the job position. "Silent quitting" is a strategy to set clear boundaries and avoid mental overload.

2. Lack of appreciation at work

Often, extra work and extra dedication are not appreciated or rewarded by employers. In an environment where effort is not rewarded, many young people may choose not to invest additional time and energy. So, refusing to engage beyond the minimum can also be a form of reaction to the lack of appreciation at work.

3. Technology and culture of quick results

In the age of the Internet and technology, where everything seems achievable in a few seconds, the younger generation may perceive success differently. They may not be willing to spend excessive time or effort on results that are not guaranteed or immediate. Even in this case, "silent quitting" may be their choice to save energy for things that have more value outside of work.

4. Balance between professional and personal life

One of the main changes in the perception of work is the focus on the balance between personal and professional life. A person may not be willing to sacrifice free time to meet the excessive expectations of employers. He can choose to make work a part of his life, but not the main purpose of living.

5. Lack of clear promises

Many employers often promise promotions, raises or other benefits that do not materialize in practice. This gap between what is promised and what actually happens can create a great deal of mistrust among young people. Instead of working harder in the hope of earning more, they may choose to keep this approach to work.

6. A "silent revolt" against the work culture

"Silent quitting" can also reflect a form of silent protest against work systems that do not respect the needs and desires of the individual. By not investing more than is minimally necessary, employees show that they are no longer willing to accept a work system that does not offer security or fair remuneration.
