The third and final season of "Squid Game" is not for the faint of heart. In fact, even the series' creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, warns:
"The tone is even darker. The world has less hope and I wanted to reflect that."
The first season was shocking. The second, even more brutal. The third? A reflection on revenge, violence, and what it means to be human in a system that dehumanizes you. In this final chapter, there is no shortage of new games, surprise characters, and dramatic twists, but the illusion of a happy ending? Forget it.
“Some stories simply can't have a happy ending , otherwise they would lose their essence,” says Hwang.
And this attitude is clear in every episode of season three. Murders in "creative" ways, characters who transform under extreme pressure, and an increasingly murky moral climate.
Although the series was originally intended to be a single season, its international success prompted Hwang to return for two more seasons, filmed non-stop. Actor Lee Jung-jae, who plays Gi-hun, says the finale is unpredictable:
"I didn't expect how it would end. The reactions will be strong and varied."
Will there be a possible return in some form or another of "Squid Game"? Hwang doesn't rule it out as a possibility:
"Maybe a spin-off (new story related to a character or event), maybe a story that happens in parallel. There are still things left to be said."
Meanwhile, fans should brace themselves. The end is coming, and it looks like it won't be an easy bite to swallow. The trailer for the third season has been released, while its official launch date is June 27th.
