Local Japanese media reports that some companies have banned their employees from wearing glasses. According to them, the glasses make them look "cold."
The companies tried to justify themselves. One airline said it banned the glasses for safety reasons, while other companies in the fashion and beauty industry said the glasses conceal employee makeup.
Naturally, the move was not well received.
This is not the first time Japan is forcing women to wear something specific in the workplace.
In March, women refused to appear in makeup jobs as required by the new rules. While in the summer, they organized an online petition to ban mandatory dress codes for women only.
The petition was launched by writer Yumi Ishikaëa, who said women have various health problems simply because they are forced to wear heels at work. She said that she was forced to wear heels when working at a funeral home.
In June, Japan's Health Minister Takumi Nemoto said heels "are necessary and appropriate" in the workplace.
Kumiko Nemoto, a professor of sociology at Kyoto University of Foreign Researchers, told the BBC that Japan is responding to archaic policies that value a woman's appearance more than ability.
"The reasons women are not supposed to wear glasses make no sense," she said. ?It's sex work. Very discriminatory. ?
