If you spend enough time on TikTok, you've probably seen tons of people chatting directly with their audience in real time.
If you watch the video for a few minutes, you will likely see the TikTok filled with cowboy hats, mustaches, roses, sunglasses, etc. These are not filters, but effects that are added by viewers - called "gifts".
Gifts can be different – ??rose, wreath, soccer ball, etc. Of course, because they are virtual, the users who make the videos don't get to take these gifts home. But there is a monetary value associated with each gift.
They can earn anywhere from 1 cent for gifts like roses and tennis balls, to over $530 for other icons. Many other gifts cost $1 to $5, including sunglasses ($2.64), fire emoji (7 cents), gold pendants ($2.66), and more.

Each gift is worth a certain number of coins. Each TikTok coin is worth about 1.4 cents. However, the exact cost to buy a coin depends on how many coins you buy at a time and whether you buy them through the app on your phone or through the TikTok website.

Gifts are given to users through Diamonds, "based on their popularity". After earning Diamonds, users can exchange them for cash through a bank account or PayPal.
50 coins equals 25 diamonds. Each diamond is worth 5 cents. If you have 100 diamonds, you can cash out $50. However, TikTok keeps 50% of what you earn, so if you've earned $50 worth of diamonds, you can only withdraw $25.
However, ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, has included in the regulations that they are free to change the exchange rate between Diamond and dollars at their discretion.
