R. Kelly has been rushed to the hospital after a drug overdose while in jail.
He is serving a 30-year prison sentence for extortion and sexual exploitation. According to a legal document, the 57-year-old singer, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was placed in solitary confinement on June 10 and given anti-anxiety medication by prison staff.
His lawyer said he was given additional medication that day and was told to take it. Three days later, Kelly reported feeling “dizziness” and “weakness” and complained of blurred vision. Following these symptoms, he lost consciousness and was immediately transported to Duke University Hospital.
The incident is being investigated as questions have been raised over how prison authorities handled the situation.
R. Kelly is serving a 30-year prison sentence after being found guilty of several serious charges that came to light as part of the #MeToo movement, which exposed the systematic nature of his sexual abuse.
In 2021, Kelly was found guilty of nine federal charges, after prosecutors argued that he had used his fame to recruit and abuse underage women and girls for more than two decades.
