Emily Ratajkowski doesn't have a single close friend who is a heterosexual man, and for her, that's fine.
In a new interview with Elle UK, the 34-year-old model and actress stated that there are no heterosexual men in her life who don't have a very specific role.
“I still like men,” she said, “but I don’t have any heterosexual men in my life, unless they are a romantic interest.”
She adds:
“In the hierarchy of needs, this is at the top of the pyramid, which is what I like. Men are fun and entertaining, but they are not part of my core. The rest of my life is community – women, queer people , and being a mother.”
Ratajkowski has a 4-year-old son, Sylvester Apollo Bear, with her ex-husband Sebastian Bear-McClard. Following her divorce in 2022, she spent some time "enjoying the freedom" of being single , before getting back on the dating scene.
During this period, she was rumored to be in a relationship with several well-known showbiz names, but she herself stated on her podcast "High Low With EmRata" that she only attracts "the worst kind of men."
Now, Emily says that "not putting men in your focus is wonderful," adding:
"In our world, men have taken up a lot of space, but what I've found instead is community."
This community includes her longtime friend Lena Dunham, who has written a role for Ratajkowski in the upcoming Netflix series, "Too Much" - her first major role since 2019.
“I don’t take a lot of offers,” she says. “I really value control. In my 20s, I didn’t have a lot of control over my career. Now I like to create, not just be an extra in a project. With Lena, I had a lot of influence on the character’s development – ??and that was a lot of fun.”
The character she plays, according to Elle UK, is "the influential girlfriend of the protagonist's ex" - a role written for Emily, with her input, but which doesn't seem to relate to the woman she is today.
“I'm very intrigued by this decade of my life,” she says of her 30s.
"My mother gave birth to me at 39 and always romanticized her 30s as a time of empowerment and personal exploration for a woman. I'm now living it and really feeling it."
