Demi Lovato has returned to using "she/her" pronouns a year after speaking out about non-binary gender identity and indicating she would use they/them pronouns.
The "Sorry Not Sorry" singer said on the Spout podcast Tuesday that she made the decision because she's "such a fluid person." Non-binary gender is an umbrella term for gender identities; these people do not identify only/neither as male or female, they can be something in between or beyond both genders.
Further explaining why she decided to use the pronouns they/them, Lovato said her energy last year was "balanced between masculine and feminine energy." Demi said that choosing to identify with the pronouns "they/them" at one point was, for her, about "feeling human at the core."
"Lately, I've been feeling more feminine, so I've gotten 'her' again," she reaffirmed. "But I think what's important is that nobody's perfect."
The singer concluded: "Everyone gets pronouns mixed up at some point and especially when people are learning. It's all about respect."
In May 2021, Lovato spoke for the first time about non-binary gender identity and stated that she will use the pronouns they/them. "This decision has come after a lot of healing and self-reflection. I'm still learning and coming into myself and I don't claim to be an expert or a spokesperson," she said.
Previously, Demi has described himself as queer and sexuality as fluid, saying in 2020 that he "still doesn't understand", while in 2017 he told his parents that he "saw himself possibly ending up with a woman". .
