We have often read the news that someone gets divorced thanks to ChatGPT’s advice, often asks about your relationship problems, etc. and in fact, we can say that technology has managed to influence romantic relationships. However, there are real psychological questions that arise about intimacy with artificial intelligence. Relying on “artificial” partners can hinder emotional empowerment or deepen isolation. By eliminating risk, ChatGPT relationships can also shrink the possibilities for deep, transformative connections.
Studies of parasocial relationships— one-sided emotional attachments to celebrities or fictional characters —show that while these connections can provide comfort, they can also create unrealistic expectations for intimacy in the real world. Similarly, ChatGPT relationships can set unrealistic standards for future human relationships, leading to disappointment or avoidance.

As ChatGPT becomes more sophisticated, the line between human and artificial society will continue to blur. Questions about emotional dependency, data privacy, and the commercialization of loneliness deserve more serious attention. But in the meantime, the rise of AI-powered relationships highlights a powerful truth about human desire: We need to connect and talk, and when human connection feels dangerous or too complicated, we will find other ways to fill that void.
