
Kosovo President Hashim Thaci resigned from his leadership post following the confirmation of a war crimes indictment by the Hague Specialized Prosecutor's Office.

In a statement to the media, Thaçi said that he was notified of the indictment today (Thursday, November 5). He said he decided to resign because he did not want to appear before The Hague Tribunal as president of Kosovo, but as a former KLA leader. "This is not a farewell, but a goodbye. The day before, the leader of PDK, Kadri Veseli, resigned from the leading position and today he will leave for The Hague. He said he appreciates the Hague investigation and sees it as an opportunity to respond to rumors that have been circulating for a long time.
The indictment also includes other members of the KLA General Staff.
The Special Chambers and the Specialized Prosecutor's Office in The Hague (Netherlands) have been set up to investigate alleged crimes against members of the Kosovo Liberation Army that demanded the secession of Kosovo from the former Yugoslavia. The alleged crimes relate to the period 1998-2000 and are related to the killing of Serbs, Albanians, national minorities and political opponents.
