TikTok is making "unsexy" beauty products look very attractive

The corner of the internet known as the beauty zone on "TikTok" (or BeautyTok, for short) is usually filled with beautifully packaged products, where the appearance of the product is valued more than the function itself.

Celebrity-endorsed body lotions posing in photoshoot-worthy bathrooms, lip balms and body sprays shimmering against a gorgeous backdrop, that's what we're usually served. But lately, things are changing. The focus seems to be no longer on the appearance or packaging of the products, but on their function and efficacy.

"Unsexy beauty products" seem to be the newest trend on TikTok, with many users sharing videos of products that "worked" for them, regardless of their appearance.

The "unsexy" label is defined by two things: the packaging - which favors straightforward product descriptions over large fonts or photogenic colors - and the purpose for which users choose these products. From video to video, trending participants share recommendations on products ranging from shampoos, facials to other dermatological issues, such as dry skin, eczema or rosacea.

Commentators have also "embrace" this trend.

"It's so nice to find a video that I actually trust [because] it's not sponsored," one commenter wrote.
