How often should you wash your hair and how to choose the right shampoo?

Since we were children, many of us washed our hair every day, thinking that if the body needed cleaning every day, why not the hair? But later, we heard conflicting advice - "shampoo is harmful," "hair should not be washed often," and so on. But is shampoo really harmful to hair? And what are the rules to use it properly? The experts gave us the answers we were looking for!

Is shampoo bad for hair?

According to hairstylist Yene A. Damtew, there is nothing wrong with using shampoo. “Having a clean scalp is essential for healthy hair,” she says.

Dermatologist Dr. Deeptej Singh adds that it's true that shampoo can strip the natural oils that protect the scalp and hair strands, but it should neither be overdone nor neglected. The key is the golden balance: "Neither wash your hair too often, nor too rarely," he emphasizes.

How often should you wash your hair?

The ideal frequency depends on several personal factors: hair type, chemical treatments, physical activity, medications and climate. Dr. Singh explains that the average varies from once a day to once a week.

If you have thin or oily hair, more frequent washing is necessary. While thick or curly hair can be washed less often. Chemically treated hair, such as dyed or straight hair, is more fragile and therefore needs less washing.

Do not wash your hair for a long time! This can cause inflammation of the scalp, itching and dandruff due to the accumulation of oil and excess yeast.

How to choose the right shampoo?

The possibilities are endless: moisturizing, for volume, against dandruff or for color protection. The solution depends on the type of hair and scalp.

Oily hair: Choose a clarifying or anti-dandruff shampoo. It helps to remove excess oil without drying the hair.

Normal hair: Moisturizing shampoo is ideal. These often contain ingredients such as citric acid or sodium benzoate, which maintain the natural moisture balance.

Chemically treated hair: Look for products with ceramides and proteins, which help regenerate and protect the color.

How to use shampoo properly?

First, wet your hair well. Apply a small amount of shampoo (more may be needed for long or curly hair). Focus on the scalp and massage gently to remove excess oil and product. Too much shampoo in the length can dry out the hair.

Do not forget to rinse it well, to avoid residues that can cause scaling or dandruff. Finally, apply a conditioner to protect the hair strands and give them strength.

And remember: healthy hair is not just about shampoo. A clean scalp, a balanced diet and internal care are essential for beautiful and strong hair!
