Should we always be honest in a relationship?

Honesty is one of the pillars of a strong relationship, but is it always necessary to tell the truth every time? For some, being completely honest is the only way to build mutual trust. For others, some truths, especially those that may cause unnecessary pain, may be better left unsaid. Where does the balance lie? Is it right to hide a small truth to protect your partner's feelings, or could it cause bigger problems in the future?

One aspect that is not often discussed is the difference between raw honesty and sensitivity. Some things can be said more delicately, without losing sincerity, but respecting the other's emotions. This may include sensitive issues such as remarks about a partner's behavior, clothing or personal choices. Being honest doesn't mean not being sensitive to what the other person is feeling.

On the other hand, absolute honesty is essential when it comes to the basic trust of the relationship. Issues like loyalty, finances and important life decisions require open and honest communication. Hiding big truths in these areas can create a rift between partners and damage the relationship to its core.

But how to decide what to say and what not to say?

Empathy is key! Thinking about how you would feel in your partner's shoes and how you would react to the same situation can help draw the line between being honest and saying things tactfully. Sometimes it is better to wait for an appropriate moment to discuss something difficult than to say it immediately in an emotional moment.

At the end of the day, every relationship is unique and depends on the dynamics of the couples. For some, absolute honesty can work without problems, while for others, some "sparing" truth may be more suitable to maintain peace and harmony. It all depends on how trust and understanding is built between partners.
