There is something good that comes with crying: a tremendous sense of liberation! Sometimes, it's good to let all your emotions out, and according to Harvard Health, crying is a very liberating and emotional process. But while crying helps us process emotions, sadness, and even provides a sense of relief from stress, headaches are a consequence that comes along with this process.

But why does this happen?

Doctors think that crying causes headaches and have several explanations for this phenomenon.

"Crying can be caused by stress and this causes the body to release stress hormones, including cortisol," says doctor Javeed Siddiqui. "These stress hormones can cause headaches, along with sore throats and stuffy noses." Research from BBC Science Focus shows that stress can cause the muscles in your face to tighten, creating pressure that causes tension and headaches.

While tears during the movie "The Notebook" probably do not cause any headaches, other than a disturbed emotional state, doctors think that the greater the stress, the more headaches you experience.

"The greater the stress, the longer the crying and the greater the release of stress hormones," explains doctor Natasha Bhuyan. "I would say that the intensity of the stress and the duration of it affect the degree of headache you experience from crying."

How to stop a headache after crying?

Treatment of this condition is quite simple. "The best approach is care, rest and hydration," adds the doctor. Lowering tension can help lower stress hormones, which in turn relieve headaches. Try putting a cold compress on your eyes or the back of your neck and you will find that you will feel much better.
