Dogs (like all of us) sometimes act sick to get attention

Some dogs may pretend to be sick just to get some attention from their owners. Although their concerns should be taken seriously, it is not uncommon for them to pretend to limp or cough just to get a little more love.

Dr. Richard Pitcairn, veterinarian, explains that this behavior often starts with a real problem, but the owner's response can make the dog want to prolong the situation even if it is no longer sick.

For example, if a dog sneezes and gets immediate attention, they learn to associate the sneeze with love. Dogs can't mimic certain symptoms like fever or diarrhea, so most of them tend to show symptoms they can control, such as lameness or sneezing. However, it is important to consult a vet if your dog shows signs of illness or injury, as he may be experiencing genuine distress.

Remember, dogs, like people, can experience minor setbacks during recovery. But if your vet can't find any signs of previous illness, it could indicate that your dog is faking it.

If you suspect your dog is acting out, consider factors that may have affected him such as: recent lifestyle changes or the amount of time you spend away from him. During such situations it is good to spend time with him whether it is through a walk or even some extra petting. So, show your dog how important he is to you, and the illness he suddenly developed can disappear within minutes. Pretty much like you were when you were a kid. If not even now that you've grown up, hehe.
