Living long is something we all desire, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or where we live. According to a Danish study, only 25% to 30% of our lifespan is determined by our genes. This means that our lifestyle has a lot of influence on our life expectancy. In Western countries, living in the city and sitting for hours in front of electronic devices can affect longevity issues.

Another influencing element is loneliness, which is turning into an epidemic. Doctors say that the feeling of loneliness is equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

But have you heard about the power of the nine rules of longevity? Let's break each of them down together!

#1 Move as much as possible

You don't have to wait until you go to the gym, use a workout app, or engage in sports to exercise. In areas where life expectancy is above average, people are active throughout the day. Try taking a walk in nature instead of the car, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and you will see noticeable changes.

#2 Identify your life purpose

Ikigai is a Japanese method related to identifying the purpose in life and this is a reason to live and leave the house in the morning with a clear motive. Looking inside yourself, from passions and things you like to do, to commitments in society, work, family, all are acceptable goals for everyone's life.

#3 Reduce stress

Easier said than done, right? We live in societies that put us under constant pressure, so stress leads to chronic inflammation and various diseases. De-stressing through a yoga session, a simple walk or even a long chat with a friend is a good idea to reduce stress levels.

#4 The 80% Rule

When it comes to diet, doctors and nutritionists suggest that you follow the 80% rule. Basically, stop eating before you feel completely full or reach 80% of your body capacity, as this is a method that affects your lifespan.

#5 Change your diet

According to some nutritionists and doctors, maintaining a diet that focuses on plant-based foods is an effective way to prevent a number of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease. A study from the University of Bergen in Norway concluded that following a plant-based diet rich in whole grains, legumes, nuts, fresh fruit and vegetables can add 10 years to our lives.

#6 Summer? Yes, but drink it in moderation

People who drink no more than two glasses of red wine a day can apparently live longer than those who avoid alcohol altogether.

#7 Engagement in the activities of the country where you live

Those who belong to a religious community, of any kind or faith, and regularly participate in ceremonies, can live 4 to 14 years longer than those who do not belong to any community at all. A sports club, reading can be another idea where you can join to share some beautiful moments through conversations, socializing etc.

#8 Put family first

Couples who stay close to family tend to be more loyal, which seems to extend their existence by at least three years.

#9 Maintain friendships

Friendships are like plants: they need to be nurtured. But with our busy lives, meeting friends turns into a real luxury, so much so that every conversation or communication takes place online. Doctors say it's very important for mental health to maintain a rich and active social life, not just on Facebook or Instagram.
