Venice could enter the list of endangered heritage sites, according to UNESCO, and this could be avoided if the Italian government tightens measures to protect the city.
UNESCO has recommended that Venice enter this list, because the city is facing "irreparable" damage due to problems caused by climate change and mass tourism.
In a statement, UNESCO said: "The effects of continued deterioration due to human intervention, including development, the impact of climate change and mass tourism, threaten to cause irreparable changes in the extraordinary and universal value that the city carries. Moreover, the combined effects of human-induced and natural changes are causing deterioration and damage to built structures and urban areas."
Venetian authorities said they would carefully read the recommendation and communicate with the Italian government.
On the other hand, Venice is facing a significant number of tourists, who have flocked to the iconic city, after the floods that the city suffered in 2019 and the pandemic that interrupted tourism in Venice.
