People have been looking for ways to shut up at night for years. Mouth breathing can cause snoring and thirst at night, as well as dry mouth and bad breath in the morning.
TikTok has helped spread another potentially dangerous idea: sealing your lips with glue to stop mouth breathing at night.
Is there a risk? "If you have obstructive sleep apnea, yes, it can be very dangerous," sleep specialist Dr. Raj Dasgupta, an associate professor of clinical medicine at the University of Southern California.
Obstructive sleep apnea, which is the complete or partial blockage of the airways, is one of the most common and dangerous sleep disorders.
However, if you do decide to try gagged with glue, don't block your mouth horizontally like you're a serial killer's hostage — even TikTok users point this out. Just a bit of tape placed vertically over the edge is supposed to work.
"Sleep problems should be checked and evaluated by a doctor before you gag. In my opinion, gagging is unlikely to help you sleep better,” said Dasgupta.
