A new alarming study in the UK found that makeup brushes can be more contaminated than a toilet - this was seen from photos taken under a microscope, showing tools wrapped in mold, bacteria, yeast and other germs.
"It's horrible to see the amount of bacteria that a makeup brush could potentially have," Dr. Suhail Alam told Jam Press.
The study aimed to show how these cosmetic accessories can turn into real microbial factories if not properly maintained - even after only a few uses.
To determine what is hidden on the surface of the brush, the researchers took samples from 12 cosmetic applicators and then analyzed each under a microscope. They then shot photos of each bottle.
It turned out that more bacteria contained mascara brushes, then those of blush, as well as lip glosses.
In the worst case, these brushes can spread infections and irritate the skin.
"Even after a person uses a makeup brush for the first time, it will already be forming bacterial colonies," Alam warned. "With daily use, the brushes will automatically start collecting dirt, contaminants, oil and dead skin cells. This is why they act as a breeding ground for bacteria, leading to skin irritations.
He continued:
"If a contaminated brush comes in contact with the eye, it can cause infections or allergic reactions."
Fortunately, pollution "can be avoided with a weekly cleaning routine".
"To properly clean the brushes, we suggest foaming the brush in a suitable skin cleanser, massaging any hair on the palm of the hand, rinsing them with lukewarm water and then squeezing the brush to remove any excess moisture, ”he said.
