In one way or another, it may have been inevitable that you would not have met a controlling person in your life, such as a partner, parent, or even friends. How should you behave?
1 - Speak openly
When it comes to dealing with any kind of conflict, communication is key. When dealing with someone who is displaying controlling behavior, it is important to talk to them actively and directly about the issue.
- Accept the problem
- Explain the emotions
- Offer a solution
2 - Set boundaries
Setting strong, solid and stable boundaries is the best way to deal with controlling people. Remember, you are not obliged to give anyone time, energy and attention.
3 - Understand when you need to leave
Last but certainly not least, having a controlling person in your life requires knowing and accepting when it's time to leave. When setting boundaries does not work, then it is important to create emotional space and distance in a different way. If they constantly become defensive, violate your boundaries, and / or continue to exhibit controlling behaviors, this is simply a dynamic of unhealthy relationships.
