Shannon says she was used to her son being bullied by other boys at school, but when he told her they were calling him "simp", he did not know what to think because he had never heard her.
The meaning of "simp"? In short, it basically means treating girls well because you like them.
"Wait a minute, my son is being bullied because he is being nice to the girls ?!"
Recently, the son had told Shannon that a girl he liked had made it clear that he was not interested in her. So they had continued to be friends.
"You do all these things as a parent to get your child on the right track, to treat everyone well, and you never think that your child will be targeted by bullies for that," says Shannon.
So what exactly is a "sim"?
While many parents may not be familiar with the word "simp", chances are that the Z generation or today's teens have mentioned it or at least heard the term.
The main Urban Dictionary definition for a simp is "someone who does a lot for a person they like". Other definitions in the dictionary of online sources include "a guy who puts girls in front of society" and "a guy who is very depressed about women, especially if she has expressed disinterest in him".
In TikTok it is used for many humorous memes and videos, but also insultingly.
Connor Howlett, digital strategist, says that there are "nuances of toxic manhood because it is associated with the expression of many emotions."
In any case, if in its essential sense it means "doing a lot for the man you love", what is wrong with being a "simp"?
