We all know how many plans, dreams or organizations annulled the pandemic that invaded the country and the whole world. Today, almost 1 year later, its consequences appear in many indicators and one of them is the low number of marriages.
A good portion of couples have given up celebrating in pandemic times, thus reducing the number of marriages significantly during 2020. According to data published in a Monitor.al article, last year there were about 17.5 thousand marriages in the country, or in other words - the year with the lowest number of marriages since 1990.
If we compare it to the previous year, the celebrations have dropped by 22%. Demands to celebrate seem to have dropped significantly since March, when the country went under siege, and the last thing couples could do was get married.
In March there were only 640 marriage acts, from nearly 1,700 in the same period a year earlier. In April, at the peak of quarantine, only 71 marriage acts were performed, with a contraction of 96% compared to the same month a year earlier. The month with the highest number of marriages during this year remains August, but anyway if we compare it with August of a year ago the reduction is significant.
However, beyond the pandemic, the number of marriages in the country had been falling for years, a phenomenon that highlights other demographic problems such as population aging, high immigration, lifestyle changes or increasing marriage age.
In addition to couples' plans to get married and start a new stage, the lack of weddings has brought chain effects in many business chains ranging from event companies, restaurants, make-up studios, to dress shops.
