The color that will shape the next year is Viva Magenta , according to the Pantone Color System.
Described as "a shade of purple" that balances warmth and coolness, Viva Magenta is "an unusual color for an unusual time," Pantone said in a statement.
Pantone is known for creating the Pantone Matching System, which is used to identify and match colors in industries such as printing, graphic design and fashion.
"Brave and fearless, [Viva Magenta] is a color that promotes optimism and joy," the statement said. This selection aims to reflect the latest trends in all sectors, including fashion, beauty, technology, design and home decor.
In the midst of the pandemic, Viva Magenta represents safety, confidence and connection in a world struggling to recover, according to Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute.
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said the shade was inspired by the natural color of tiny insects called cochineal .
