According to a study from the University of Essex in the United Kingdom, daughters who grow up with mothers who have high expectations and don't hesitate to repeat them are more likely to be successful in life.

The study, which included over 15,000 British girls, aged 13 and 14, over a ten-year period, found that when mothers (or key parental figures) have high expectations and make clear criticisms to their daughters on a regular basis, the latter are less likely to become pregnant as teenagers, more likely to attend university and less likely to remain in dead-end jobs or be unemployed for long periods of time.

Simply put: having a mother who “pulls your head” for lessons, responsibilities, and right decisions is actually a blessing with long-term effects. Even when teenagers turn to their mothers with annoyance, cold answers, or slam the door in their faces; their mother’s words and expectations remain embedded in their minds and, without realizing it, influence the choices they make.

The study's author, Ericka G. Rascon-Ramirez, emphasizes that even when daughters try to do the opposite of what their mother says, her influence continues to be there, in the background, influencing their choices.

“Often, we do what we think is best for us, even if it goes against our parents’ wishes,” she writes. “But no matter how hard we try to avoid their recommendations, they still influence us.”

The study also shows that setting multiple expectations simultaneously (for example: “you should go to university” and “don't start a family too early”) increases the likelihood that girls will follow both of these paths.

Even if a girl acts only out of fear of "mom finding out," the result is just as valid; she is more likely to make careful decisions that preserve her options for the future.

It's not just about good grades or smart decisions in the moment, but about forming an inner voice that later in life makes girls feel more capable, more confident, and more prepared to succeed. And that voice usually has the timbre of a mother who never tires of repeating the same things to you.

So, if you had (or have) a midwife who makes you uncomfortable with her advice, questions, and expectations, tell her thank you. Because, apparently, she's just laying the foundation for your success.
