Donald Trump's order: Now, the US recognizes only two genders – male

The US federal government will recognize only two genders, "male" and "female," according to an executive order that President Donald Trump signed on Monday.

The order, titled "Protecting Women from Gender Ideological Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government," states that "genders are not changeable."

The federal government will also switch from using the term "gender" to "sex" and that sex is "an individual's unchangeable biological classification," a Trump administration official told reporters Monday.

Trump's executive order will undo the Biden administration's efforts to be more inclusive about Americans' gender identity. Biden pledged to "review all orders, regulations, guidance documents, policies, programs or other actions" that could violate transgender rights.

Since 2022, US citizens have been able to choose "X" as their gender designation on their passports. Now, all government agencies will ensure that official documents, including passports, visas, and cards, "accurately reflect the sex of the bearer."

Several civil and human rights groups immediately vowed to challenge Trump's agenda.
