The Covid-19 pandemic has caused nearly 6.9 million deaths worldwide, more than double the number officially registered, according to a new analysis by the University of Washington Institute for Health Measurements and Assessment (IHME), reports Reuters. Meanwhile 3.28 million deaths have now been officially reported.
According to Reuters, IHME is an independent health research organization that provides comparable measurements of health problems around the world and has been cited in the past by the White House. IHME says deaths from Covid-19 are not reported as many countries only record what happens in a hospital setting or in people with a confirmed infection. For this reason, IHME is changing the way these figures are calculated.
"In other countries, such as Ecuador, Peru and the Russian Federation, the discrepancy between reported deaths and analysis of death rates compared to expected death rates, sometimes referred to as 'excessive mortality', suggests that the overall level of deaths from Covid-19 is much higher than official reports, ”IHME said in a statement.
In the United States, IHME analysis estimated Covid-19-related deaths of more than 905,000, while official figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on May 5 estimated 575,491 deaths due to Covid-19.
