So far symptoms such as fever, loss of taste / smell or difficulty breathing are known as Covid-19 symptoms, but these are not the only symptoms associated with coronavirus disease.
Some infected people have less typical symptoms.
"Respiratory symptoms tend to be the most common, obviously, but we have also seen symptoms that involve other organ systems," says Dr. Eric Cioe-Pena.
Some of the atypical symptoms include:
Redness, similar marks on the skin to that of chickenpox
When dermatologists in Lombardy, Italy, evaluated 88 people who tested positive for COVID-19, they found that approximately 20 percent had skin symptoms. These symptoms consisted of rash, marks or spots like those of chickenpox.
"Patients may show signs that look like a skin infection at first glance," says Dr. Robert Glatter, physician in New York City.
Muscle weakness, dizziness
Mild neurological symptoms such as loss of taste or smell, headache, dizziness, or muscle weakness may appear early in the illness. More severe neurological symptoms may develop later.
"I have seen patients confused and with a different mental state," Glatter told Healthline. "Some have developed 'inflammation of the brain' that requires admission for close neurological monitoring," he added.
Cardiovascular complications
Covid-19 may increase the risk of abnormal blood clotting.
When clots form in small blood vessels, this can cause minor skin symptoms.
When clots occur in the lungs, heart or brain, this can cause more serious cardiovascular complications.
