Many people run for fun and in order to stay in shape. But, is there any connection between running and romantic relationships? To begin with, let’s look at how running can make us look and feel more attractive.
In terms of male body shape, the V-shaped body shape is generally perceived as more attractive to men - that is, wider shoulders and a slimmer waist. In the past, men with good upper body strength could gain and protect resources successfully, and thus were seen as more attractive to women.
However, such a body shape is not necessarily found in men who run. The men of the ancestors also engaged in "continuous hunting" - exhausting the prey and tracking it down tirelessly. Men who could do this successfully and provide food would also be desirable to women. In modern days, this is probably signaled by being able to run a long distance, such as a marathon. A good walk or posture is also an attractive signal for both boys and girls.
Runners are often described as winners, warriors, or heroes who have the courage and determination to move forward.
Surprisingly, there is a study that has shown that boys are judged to be more attractive to girls when carrying a sports bag than when not carrying a sports bag, suggesting that simply an outward indication that a boy can take up sports does attractive.
Running also triggers the release of neurochemicals like dopamine. This makes us feel good about ourselves and ultimately leads to a positive self-image, which in turn leads to greater feelings of self-confidence.
Running and relationships
One of the main predictors of relationship compatibility is similarity between partners. However, in most established relationships, 50% of couples report that they never run together and only about 25% ever train together.
Are runners the best partners?
Those who run probably already know the answer to that! Runners tend to have better cardiovascular efficiency and a stronger sexual desire. They also have better breathing techniques and better body awareness, which translates into an awareness of what makes them feel good. Slightly more than half of men and slightly less than half of women report that their sex lives improved after they started running. Couples running together report having more sex.
There are no studies on whether running makes us behave more romantically, but in addition to making us fitter and healthier, it definitely improves our sex life and makes us more attractive.
